When reading “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons” is a great way to bring abacus into the mix.

The first few pages have pictures of buttons. So I started counting the groups of colored buttons. The story takes a positive spin when Pete the Cat loses a button, he doesn’t dry when he loses a button.

On the abacus, we start with four beads, and then as a button pops off, I take away 1 bead on the abacus.

I also incorporate using fingers. This helps because we can display the numbers in different ways.
