Fun and Interactive Learning with September's Calendar: Counting, Tracing, and Special Days!

September 07, 20243 min read

Hi, this is Miss Lynette, and I’m so happy you’re here to join me for a fun learning adventure as we explore the month of September together! 🎉 Whether you're a parent looking for an engaging activity for your little one or a teacher introducing the concept of calendars to young learners, this post will walk you through an easy and interactive way to make learning about September fun that is abacus themed.

September Calendar Basics

September is the ninth month of the year, and in 2024, it has 30 days. On our worksheets, you’ll find two versions: one with more beads for counting and one with fewer, depending on what’s easiest for you to read. Today, we’re using the regular worksheet with beads, just like an abacus, to help us count the days.

Start by tracing the word "September" at the top of the worksheet. Do you know how to spell it? It starts with S-E-P-T-E-M-B-E-R, and we add the year "2024" right next to it.

Trace the Days of the Week and the Numbers Day

Do you know the days of the week? Let’s say them together: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Each day, we’ll trace the number of the day on our calendar. For example, if today is September 1st, you’ll trace the number "1," and we’ll color in the bead to mark the day!

Fun fact: In 2024, September 1st is a Sunday. What’s the day after Sunday? That’s right—Monday! And the day before? Saturday! Try tracing all the days as you go along.

Identifying Weekends and Weekdays

Let’s take a closer look at our calendar. Do you see the weekends? Saturday and Sunday make up the weekend, so let’s color them in brown. The rest of the days—Monday through Friday—are called weekdays. These are the days most people go to school or work.

Special Day in September: Labor Day

One special day in September is Labor Day, which always happens on the first Monday of the month. This year, it falls on September 2nd! Trace the number "2" on your calendar and color in two beads on your worksheet to mark the day. Labor Day is a fun day to celebrate with family!

Counting with the Abacus

Here’s where the real fun begins! We’re going to use an abacus to help us count some bigger numbers, like 17 and 24. On an abacus, we have a tens column and a ones column. For example, the number 17 is made by putting "1" bead in the tens column and "7" beads in the ones column. Trace the numbers on your calendar and color in the beads to see how numbers like 18 and 24 are made!

More Fun with September

September is full of exciting days. Maybe it’s someone’s birthday, or you have a special event coming up! Use your calendar to mark these important days by tracing the numbers and coloring the beads. You can even make up your own events to celebrate!

And that’s our adventure through September! I hope you enjoyed learning about the days of the week, how to trace numbers, and using an abacus to count. Be sure to visit LearningWithLynette.com to download your free September worksheet so you can follow along and keep track of each day.
